Sandblasting is a surface preparation method that involves using high-pressure air and abrasive materials to clean and roughen surfaces. The process is highly effective in removing dirt, rust, paint, and other contaminants from a variety of surfaces, including metal, concrete, and wood. The first step in sandblasting is to select the appropriate abrasive material, such as sand, steel grit, or aluminum oxide, based on the type of surface being cleaned and the desired finish. The abrasive material is then mixed with high-pressure air and propelled through a blasting nozzle to create a high-velocity stream that removes surface contaminants.

To achieve the desired level of surface preparation, sandblasting is performed to meet specific industry standards, such as Sa 2.5 (ISO 8501-1-1:2007), which refers to the degree of surface roughness and cleanliness. Prior to sandblasting, the surface is checked for salt contamination, and if present, the surface is pressure washed and retested to prevent salt from being driven into the steel and contaminating the abrasive grit.
